Looking at their recent history, there are two games that stand out particularly as the best they have to offer and that’s Tomb Raider (2013) and its sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider. Well before we start making guesses as to what ‘AAAA’ actually means besides marketing fluff, it would be better to start with what Crystal Dynamics does best as a studio. But what about ‘AAAA’ games as Perfect Dark is stated to be? And while the reception to that one is mixed at best, there’s no denying that Crystal Dynamics is a very talented developed, one that can definitely tackle AAA game development. Their most recent release was Marvel’s Avengers that came out in 2020. Things changed for Crystal Dynamics in 2006 though when they were handed the reigns of the Tomb Raider series, a franchise they have guided to this day, most famously with the critically acclaimed reboot franchise.
#Aaaa perfect dark series
However, they really started to hit their stride on the original PlayStation, giving us the cult classic Legacy of Kain series and the underrated but conflicting Gex series. They have been around since the early 1990s, developing games for the ill-fated 3DO console. So why is this a big deal? Well, Crystal Dynamics is a developer that many gamers are very familiar with. The Initiative would not be tackling the adventure alone but Crystal Dynamics would be helping get the game to the finish line. But now a new piece of news has come out. And while we would love to be playing this new Perfect Dark sooner, the simple fact that we’re getting it is enough to justify the wait. It was assumed, based on the teaser trailer and the lack of a release year that the game would be quite a while away, meaning this would either be a mid-life game for the Series X|S or maybe even release late in the system’s life. When it was revealed at last year’s Game Awards, the general idea that Microsoft wanted to get across was that: ‘we’re making a new Perfect Dark, it’s coming to the Xbox Series X|S, The Initiative is developing it and it’s a reboot. But while we don’t know much about the game, we do know a bit about the people working on it. It’s prequel, Perfect Dark Zero… ok not so much, but the original is great! The legacy of Perfect Dark is a really strong one and a name that means a lot of gamers of a certain vintage, so the very thought of bringing it back for modern audiences was always certain to strike a chord. The original Perfect Dark on the Nintendo 64 is a masterpiece and one of the best first-person action games ever made. Obviously, a big part of that is its legacy. Of all the announced games coming to the Xbox Series X|S, I’ve got to say that I’m most excited for The Initiative’s Perfect Dark, despite us knowing next to nothing about it.
